The Dragon Age franchise didn’t exactly start out with a bang when Dragon Age: Origins launched in 2009. Until then, we’ll have to wait and see if it’s quality will match up with its long development time. It was originally supposed to come out in 2012, fell off the radar, and more recently remerged as a game promised for release in 2014 (Itagaki claims it’s about 80 percent complete). Itagaki left Tecmo way back in 2008, founded Valhalla soon thereafter, and announced Devil’s Third itself in 2010. Some people are skeptical about Devil’s Third, and for good reason. Dark Souls launched in 2011 and was a spiritual successor to the PS3-exclusive Demon’s Souls, but it was only when Dark Souls came out – and reached players who didn’t necessarily own a PlayStation 3 – that the entire hardcore, brutally difficult mantra of the experience truly proliferated and resonated. That’s the original Dark Soul’s tagline, and when you played the game, you realized rather quickly it was an apt warning. So consider CounterSpy’s inclusion on this list a hope that the game lives up to what it’s capable of. While it definitely invokes a sort of Metroidvania feel, it’s really its own game, one rooted in the espionage and intrigue of the Cold War, when it seemed like we were just a moment away from nuclear destruction every day of the week. CounterSpy, at its core, is a side-scrolling spy-action game that’s as much about exploration as it is about combat.
And that’s good news, because CounterSpy is an incredibly promising project. So why is it on this list? That’s easy: CounterSpy was supposed to come out in 2013, and it’s gone off the radar to be fixed-up and bettered for its release. When I finally went hands-on with it months later at Gamescom, I understood why I wasn’t allowed to touch it. Once, I saw it at E3, and was only allowed to look, and not actually play myself. And we’re super excited to see the end result. That’s right, a studio that’s best-known for the Far Cry franchise, some Tom Clancy games, and – you guessed it – Assassin’s Creed will be able to spread its wings on something decidedly different, something it simply hasn’t had the chance to work on before.

Lords of Shadow was a great game – one heavily-inspired not only by the established lore of the series but by other series like God of War and Devil May Cry – and it’s exciting that we’re finally going to get its sequel.īut what’s perhaps even more interesting about Child of Light is where it’s coming from: Ubisoft Montreal.
It’s just the first time a untraditional Castlevania game succeeded at what it tried to do. It wasn’t the first time the franchise jumped from 2D to 3D, or tried to do something different. With the original Lords of Shadow in 2011, the Castlevania series took an interesting left turn.
SEGA has put The Creative Assembly on the project, veterans of, among other series, the Total War franchise on PC. You play as Amanda, Ripley’s daughter, as she investigates the mystery surrounding her famous mother’s demise.
